๐ Microsoft 365 Roadmap Item #501451 | Products: SharePoint, SharePoint Syntex, Microsoft 365 Copilot | Status: In Development (Preview Available) | Expected GA: December 2026
If you’ve ever struggled to find a document on SharePoint, noticed outdated files cluttering search results, or found that Microsoft Copilot gave you a vague or unhelpful answer; this update is for you.
Microsoft is working on a significant improvement to how SharePoint manages content, and it’s coming with a little help from AI. Officially called “AI in SharePoint” (Roadmap ID 501451), this feature is currently available in Preview and is on track for full general availability in December 2026.
So, What Exactly Is Changing?
Think of SharePoint as the organization’s digital filing cabinet. Over time, that cabinet can get messy: files without labels, outdated pages that nobody’s updated in years, and content that’s hard for people (or AI) to make sense of.
This update brings AI directly into SharePoint to help automatically tidy things up. Here’s what it will do:
- Automate metadata tagging: AI will help label and categorise documents so they’re easier to find and filter.
- Fix stale content: Outdated pages and files will be flagged or updated, keeping your intranet current and trustworthy.
- Enable faster page creation: Creating new SharePoint pages will be quicker and easier, with AI assistance built in.
- Improve compliance: Content will be better aligned with retention and governance policies, reducing compliance risk.
- Enrich content for Copilot: This is the big one. By making content richer and better structured, Microsoft 365 Copilot will be able to give you far more accurate, grounded answers when you ask it questions.
Why Does This Matter to You?
Many of us are already using, or will soon be using, Microsoft 365 Copilot to help with everyday tasks: summarising documents, drafting emails, finding information across the organization. But Copilot is only as good as the content it’s working with.
If SharePoint is full of unlabelled, outdated, or poorly structured content, Copilot’s answers will reflect that. This update is essentially about making our digital workspace Copilot-ready, so when you ask Copilot a question, it can give you a confident, accurate response drawn from reliable, well-organized information.
“AI in SharePoint ensures content is Copilot-ready by automating metadata, fixing stale content, enabling fast page creation, improving compliance, and enriching content so Copilot can deliver more accurate, grounded answers.”
Microsoft 365 Roadmap, Item #501451
What Are the Expected Benefits?
๐ Easier to Find Things
Better metadata means search results that actually make sense, with no more digging through pages of irrelevant files.
๐ค Smarter Copilot Responses
Copilot will have cleaner, richer content to work from, meaning the answers it gives will be more relevant and reliable.
๐ Content That Stays Current
Stale pages and outdated documents will be automatically flagged, so teams can focus on maintaining what matters most.
โ Reduced Compliance Risk
Automated compliance improvements mean less manual effort for content owners and fewer gaps in governance.
What’s the Timeline?
Here’s where things stand right now:
| Milestone | Status | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Preview launched | โ Complete | Early 2026 |
| General Availability (GA) | โณ In Development | December 2026 |
Note: Microsoft originally targeted June 2026 for general availability, but as of April 2026, the team confirmed they are still in development and have updated the expected GA date to December 2026. Timelines may continue to shift.
Do You Need to Do Anything Right Now?
For most employees, no action is needed at this stage. This is something our IT and content management teams will be monitoring as it moves through preview and towards full release. However, there are a few things worth being aware of:
- Content owners should start thinking about quality. If you manage a SharePoint site, team site, or document library, now is a good time to review your content for completeness and accuracy. AI works best when it has good source material to work from.
- Keep an eye out for preview features. If your team uses SharePoint regularly, you may start seeing AI-assisted suggestions for metadata or content improvements. These are part of the preview rollout, so feel free to try them out and share your feedback with IT.
- No disruption expected. This change is designed to run in the background and assist, not to replace how you currently work or to move or delete your files without warning.
Questions or Concerns?
If you have questions about how this may affect your team’s SharePoint sites, or if you’re interested in participating in the preview, please reach out to your IT team or intranet administrator. We’ll also be sharing further updates as this feature moves closer to general availability.
